Media Representation of Sexual and Gender-Based Violence in the Czech Republic from the Perspective af Survivors and Non-participants

This thesis explores how the Czech mainstream news media portrays sexual and gender-based violence from the perspective of people with different experiences and attitudes towards it. This includes survivors, relatives of survivors, those who are sensitive to the topic, and those who are skeptical or have a negative view towards the portrayal of sexual violence as a topic. The theoretical framework for this thesis is gender theory and cultural studies, specifically interpretive communities, which examine how the media influences our perceptions of gender and society. The research is qualitative and uses grounded theory practices, which involves open and axial coding to analyze how people with different experiences and attitudes towards sexual and gender-based violence perceive the way Czech media portrays the topic. This includes evaluating the portrayal, the emotions it evokes, and suggesting possible changes. Using the vignette technique, specific examples of media content on the topic of sexual violence are analyzed, and specific changes and adjustments are suggested. The evolution of czech hip hop media from subculture to mainstream

This Master's thesis focuses on the history of the hip hop subculture and the character of rappers and female rappers. The aim of this thesis is to analyze chosen hip hop media in the Czech Republic and to determine what is content and also linguistic characteristic of the chosen Czech hip hop media and further to determine the role of rappers and female rappers therein as well as gender balance of the examined media content. The thesis is divided into two sections, this being theoretical and methodical section. The theoretical section firstly examines the history of the hip hop subculture from the global perspective and its evolution in the Czech Republic. The first part of the history section focuses on the main milestones of the hip hop subculture history with the prevailing orientation on music, hip hop media, and other channels of its distribution. Audience perception of feminist motifs in The Handmaid's Tale TV series

This master's thesis explores the role of feminist ideology in audience experiences across pop culture genres using the example of the Czech audience of the American television series The Handmaid's Tale (2017). In academic debate, this title is associated with the existence of a relatively new trend of feminist perspectives penetrating popular culture, as well as with the establishment of the so-called female-centric TV series genre, which is characterised by a focus on women's experience and position, and thus on feminist themes. The aim of this thesis is to obtain findings on how representatives from the Czech audience interact with this phenomenon, namely the audience situated in an environment where there is a stronger tradition of anti- feminist attitudes. The qualitative research is based on the theory of active audiences and is derived from the analysis of six semi-structured in-depth interviews using the grounded theory method. The purpose of the thesis is to discover the different ways in which the respondents perceive feminist motifs in The Handmaid's Tale and how they reflect on them in a real social context, consequently in relation to their personal attitudes towards feminism. The diploma thesis "It's something like man flu": Male view on period discusses the way men talk about menstruation, what is the level of their communication on that topic and how they view menstruating women. The text also reveals the stereotypes on menstruation in our society, and, last but not least, focuses on men's discourses of periods. The thesis focuses on three age groups classified as generations X, Y and Z. The theoretical part presents the basic concepts used in the text, such as gender, discourse, stereotype, etc. In this section, menstruation is viewed from biological, linguistic, historical and societal perspective which demonstrates the fact that within our society, it is an important part of women's lives. Subsequently, there is a part devoted to the definition of the term generation and the distinctions typical for each generation. The aim of this thesis is to, by using a mixed research, reveal men's approach towards periods. In addition to semi-structured interviews with men from individual generations, the author made use of an on-line questionnaire as well. Facts in the textbooks of Czech for foreigners

The aim of my work is to analyze Czech language textbooks for foreigners in terms of inclusion and presentation of cultural studies. In the theoretical part I attempt to outline the development of Czech courses for foreigners and Czech as a foreign language, as well as summarize the current knowledge of area studies and explain their interconnectedness with the socio- cultural competence. In the second, practical part of my work, I focus on whether facts in various Czech language textbooks for foreigners are presented implicitly or explicitly, whether the facts presented in contrast with the culture are expected from the student and whether the facts in these textbooks are practiced and tested. In addition, I tried to capture the presence or absence of geographical information, historical information, information regarding cultural characteristics of the Czech and their lifestyle, information about English and its development, information regarding speech courtesy and behaviour, information regarding Czech literature, art, science, sports, Czech food, information regarding Czech politics and other possible facts. Teaching Cultural Studies of English-speaking Countries at Grammar Schools in the Czech Republic in 21st century

This diploma thesis focuses on cultural studies as subject matter. Their roles are examined in teaching methods, in approaches to teaching by experts and in FEP SGE. It was found out from a questionnaire survey aimed at English teachers how and to what extent cultural studies are taught in English lessons at grammar schools. A content analysis of the three most used English student's books showed that cultural studies are included in them and they correspond to the requirements of FEP SGE; however, they do not include all of the topics and even some English-speaking countries rarely appear in them as well. The last part presents a lesson plan of cultural studies aimed at grammar schools. The country that was chosen for the lesson plan was Australia as it almost did not appear in the student's books. A cultural studies perspective on the evolution of visual and audiovisual representations of indigeneous cultures.

English Summary This dissertation primarily aims to synoptically place the theme of audiovisual representations of indigenous cultures within the context of cultural studies. With its interdisciplinary overlapping, the cultural studies approach is well suited to understanding the complex significance of visual representations of culture, which are both cultural artefacts and cultural interpretations and have an impact that is as artistic as it is scientific and political. The first part of the work describes the manner in which native cultures are audio-visually represented, especially in ethnographic photographs and films which emerged in the North American and European context. The mapping of "exotic others" intensified with the first modern overseas discoveries, first by means of exhibitions of living natives, illustrations and figurines, later through photographs, films and videos. These representations were significantly influenced by the socio-cultural conditions in which they arose. As late as the turn of the 20th century, there was a dominating conviction about the capability of photographs to present an objective record of reality. Sociology, social science and human sciences in general are interested in the study of culture since its inception. This concern, however, have transformed over the years and the development of individual disciplines, especially in the 20th century, where the phenomenon of culture has become one of the main indicators of social coexistence. The concept of culture itself represents a very wide range of activities, objects and characteristics tied with the human and his behavior. This work focuses on the process, during which social scientists have begun to perceive the culture no longer just a file or a store of values, but as part of power struggle, hegemony, ideology and oppression in their everyday impact on the scientific knowledge and the creation of social discourse. It notes the rise of critical theory, which arose mainly in the context of the so-called "cultural turn", starting in the postwar period. Depiction of society in historical television series: Bridgerton versus The Knick

The diploma thesis examines the depiction of social classes, men, women and ethnic minorities in historical television serials. It is concentrated specifically on a qualitative analysis and comparison of two serials, namely Bridgerton (2020) and The Knick (2014- 2015), of which both fall within the quality television genre. The thesis deals with the ways of representation of the societies of their respective periods, aiming especially at identifying the incorrect depiction of the historical period in question, if any, and at finding similarities with the problems concerning the today's society (such as addressing the issues of social inequalities and manifestations of the identity policy). The theoretical part of the diploma thesis describes the phenomenon of a television serial, namely that concerning the historical serial and quality TV genres, the latter being the kind of television serial work distinguishing itself by comprehensive and innovative procedures, elaborate narratives, and emphasis put on the development of characters.
